1. If you try to hit everyone . . .you won't reach anyone.

4. You don't want people to be indiferent to your stuff.

1. An unintended audience might just start using your "product"!
2. "Take the members" (people that come) . . .no matter why they come.
3. Take your best shot . . .see who's using it . .. make it better
4. If people don't get it in the first 15 minutes . . .they will never get it!

1. Keep it "evolving"
2. Once it ships . . .listen to the people (before then . . don't listen to people)

Step #11: Don't let the bozos grind you down

1. People will try to discourage you . . ."it can't be done".
2. The dangerous BOZO is rich - powerful - slick . . .have an appearance of having it all together . . .successful . . .smart. Don't listen to him!!
3. BOZOSITY is just like the FLU. Build up your resistance.

Leading in times of Uncertainty

I may be in charge, but don’t always know what to do.
I may be in charge, but I don’t have all the answers.
If I knew what was going to happen, I would know what to do.

The higher you move up in an organization the greater the complexity and uncertainty there is.
That is why we need leaders.
-    When uncertainty goes away . . . you don’t need leaders.
-    Uncertainty is job security.
-    When uncertainty stops . . .you just needs people to manage what is going on.

Life is uncertain . . .but God is not uncertain

**Uncertainty  is not an indication of poor leadership.
**Uncertainty is the arena where Good leadership is identified.

I will always be uncertain . . . I am certain of it.

A story without uncertainty is a boring story. There must be conflict.

God gets maximum mileage in times of uncertainty!
•    You don’t learn much when times are calm.
•    We are part of the STORY! This story is going somewhere.
•    This is the time for Christian leaders to stand up and lead!

Practically speaking, what do you do?

1.    CLARITY
a.    It is O.K. to say “I don’t know”. It is not O.K. to be UNCLEAR!
b.    Uncertainty causes us to become unclear in our communication.
c.    Pull back to “THAT THING” that GOD called you to DO!  That original thing that God called ME to do. What originally moved me!
d.    This is the leverage you need in times of uncertainty.
e.    Joshua – promised land – TRUST GOD to take what we Don’t know about.
f.    RETREAT TO YOUR VISION!!!
i.    Say it over and over again.
2.    FLEXIBILITY
a.    Plans change – vision remains the same.
i.    Don’t confuse plans and vision.
b.    In times of uncertainty plans change a lot!
i.    We (as the church) falls in love with our plans!
ii.    Plans SHOULD change!
c.    Churches are failing because lost the vision and fell in love with PLAN.
d.    There is no better time to change plans than in times of UNCERTAINTY!
e.    Sacrifice the plan for the vision!
i.    Built to Last: Sam Walton (notorious for abandoning plans and strategy)
ii.    (SAM WALTON) No decision was sacred . . .but the vision never changed!

How to lead out:
1.    BE HONEST WITH YOUR LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS!
a.    Learn how to confidently express your uncertainty.
b.    I don’t know right now, but we are going to figure it out.
c.    I don’t know right now, but when the time comes that we are going to do something about it we are going to do something about it.
d.    I don’t know right now, but God has always been faithful to guide us in the past. I am confident that God is going to lead us.
e.    I could be wrong, but I believe that this is the best course of action!
2.    SEEK COUNSEL
a.    Leadership is not about making decisions on your own, its about OWNING decisions once they are made!
3.    PRAY LIKE CRAZY FOR WISDOM AND DIRECTION
a.    Get on your knees!
b.    Lead from quiet!
c.    Stay dependent on God’s leadership in your life.


AS A LEADER . . . I NEED GRACE!  AS A LEADER I NEED TO GIVE GRACE!

Catalyst: West Coast

Heading to Catalyst: West.  It is going to be an incredible time.  Several things I hope to experience:

1. INSIGHT: Great Leadership ideas that will help me continue to grow as a leader.
2. CONVICTION: Moments that kick me in the butt and challenge me personally - spiritually - as a leader and pastor.
3. BFO: (aka: Blind Flashes of the Obvious) You know . . .those "AHA" moments that catch you by surprise - make you pause - creates action.
4. CONNECTION: I have the opportunity to experience Catalyst with 6 of our our student staff. I am excited just to share life with them.  I also expect to connect with other like minded pastors and leaders.
   
   And most importantly . . . .
5. THE UNEXPECTED: I truly desire for the Holy Spirit to slam into my world and open my eyes to something that I would never have dreamed of discovering. Not sure what that is . . . but I pray that my spirit is quiet and open to His still small voice.

The Last .2 miles

I wrote this for Central's Family Ministries Team Member email (wow . . .that was long).  I wanted to share it with you.  It might help personally and with your team!!

A Marathon is 26.2 miles.  Before I ever ran a marathon I thought that the .2 miles was just a simple formality.  I thought to myself, “Chris, the race is really 26 miles.”  The first time I ran a marathon, I quickly realized how difficult that last “.2 miles” are!  I was so close, yet so far.  My legs felt like Jell-O – the mental aspect had blitzed my mind – and my body was wanting to shut down.  Yet I still had “.2 miles” left.  Mentally – it killed me.  The second time I ran a marathon I took a different approach.  When I hit the 26 mile mark I used the “.2 miles” to reflect.  I reflected about my training. I reflected about the excitement I felt at the starting line. I reflected about the good hearted fans that screamed “you are almost there” at mile 16. (Seriously . . .you are not almost there when you still have 10.2 miles left!) I reflected about the 78 year old that past me at mile 13. He had a sign on his back that read, “I am 78 and I have ran 114 marathons.” Now, that’s inspiring.

We, as a team, are in the .2 miles of our 2008-2009 ministry marathon.  I am sure I am not the only one who is tired – both physically and mentally! So I encourage you . . .keep running and finish strong! You still have .2 miles left.  But as you run, spend this time reflecting about this amazing ministry year!  God has done so much in the lives of kids – students – parents!  Reflecting will keep your attention off of you – your pains and aches – and focused on what God has done over this past ministry season.

(If you don't believe that I ran a marathon . . .this is me crossing the Las Vegas Marathon's finish line!)
